![]() ![]() Governments and private companies alike also need clear policies about exactly when officials should and should not use machine translation tools, either free consumer ones or others. Although these systems aren’t perfect, learning from these could be a start. When they detect poor quality in the translated texts, the texts are automatically routed to professional editors. For example, Unbabel and Kantan are platform plugins that businesses add into their customer support and marketing workflows to reach clients all over the world. ![]() Already, some machine translation companies have stopped selling their technologies for direct use of clients and now always require some sort of post-editing translation, Do Carmo says. Other similar solutions have been reported by a branch of the consulting company EY, for example, and the Swiss bank MigrosBank, which found that post-editing boosted translation productivity by up to 60 percent, according to Slator. One of the oldest examples of a company using MT+PE successfully is detailed in this 2012 study about Autodesk, a software company that provides imaging services for architects and engineers, which used post-editing for machine translation to translate the user interface into 12 languages. Meta has just released the No Language Left Behind project, which attempts to deploy high-quality translations directly between 200 languages, including languages like Asturian, Luganda, and Urdu, accompanied by data about how improved the translations were overall. For example, Google has been building a practical machine translation system for more than 1,000 languages. ![]() Software programs are also updated to include more languages, even those often described as “low-resource languages” because they are less common or harder to work with that includes most non-European languages, even widely used ones like Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic, to small community languages, like Sardinian and Pitkern. Just recently, Microsoft replaced some of its translation systems with a more efficient class of AI model. Year after year, their BLEU scores-which measure how similar machine-translated text is to a bunch of high quality human translations-get consistently better. The good news is that Big Tech companies are fully aware of this, and their algorithms are constantly improving. Not all errors in machine translation are of the same severity, but quality evaluations always find some critical accuracy errors, according to this June paper. But while translations in Spanish and Tagalog are accurate more than 90 percent of the time, there’s a 45 percent chance that they’ll be wrong when it comes to languages like Armenian. A pragmatic assessment of Google Translate for emergency department instructions from 2021 showed that the overall meaning was retained for 82.5 percent of 400 translations using Spanish, Armenian, Chinese, Tagalog, Korean, and Farsi. But the study also found that up to 8 percent of mistranslations actually have potential for significant harm. A 2019 study showed that, in medical settings, hospital discharge instructions translated with Google Translate into Spanish and Chinese are getting better over the years, with between 81 percent and 92 percent overall accuracy. Accuracy of translation can vary widely within a single language-according to language complexity factors such as syntax, sentence length, or the technical domain-as well as between languages and language pairs, depending on how well the models have been developed and trained. The case was thrown out of court, according to state legal documents. But the translation was inaccurate and the driver did not fully understand what he had agreed to given the lack of accuracy in the translation. ![]() In 2017, a cop in Kansas used Google Translate to ask a Spanish-speaker if they could search their car for drugs. Something similar happened in Denmark, where, the Copenhagen Post Online reported in September 2012, police erroneously confronted a Kurdish man for financing terrorism because of a mistranslated text message. This led the man, a construction worker, to being arrested and questioned by police, according to the Guardian in October 2017. In Israel, a young man captioned a photo of himself leaning on a bulldozer with the Arabic caption “يصبحهم,” or “good morning,” but the social media’s AI translation rendered it as “hurt them” in English or “attack them” in Hebrew. A mistranslation resulted in him erroneously referring to the woman as a nightlife establishment worker, resulting in a violent fistfight between the two in which the husband was killed, the Korea Herald reported in May. In South Korea, a young man used a Chinese-to-Korean translation app to tell his female co-worker’s Korean husband they should all hang out together again soon. ![]() ![]() Just ask them to fill your bladder or bottle while you’re in camp, and they will. Thankfully, when you trek with Thomson, your porters and guides carry plenty of water for you, so you’re never without H20. Some water bladders can hold a whopping three liters, if not more–that’s about three times the capacity of one Nalgene bottle.įor this reason, bladders shine brightest when you’re hiking for long periods without reliable access to water. Trekkers who use them can sip hands-free without slowing their pace! Huge Capacity A trekker fills it with water, places it in their backpack and sits the straw over their shoulder. Invented by Camelback in 1988, water bladders are usually large bags with a long, flexible straw. Your guides can fill a couple of your bottles with hot water so they don’t freeze before you reach Uhuru Peak!” The morning of your summit bid, you wake up before the sun, and it’s extremely cold. I didn’t want to deal with the complications of a water bladder when a Nalgene bottle would do just fine. It’s a big, big comfort on those gelid mountain slopes. This one’s huge: high on the chilly, windy Kilimanjaro trails, you can ask the Thomson staff to boil water for you bottle to put in your sleeping bag at night, and it’ll keep you warm until morning. This issue might require some backpack puzzling if volume is a concern. They take up space even when they’re not in use. Unlike bladders, bottles don’t deflate as you drink. But if you bring a bladder, you’ll want to bring bottles too, as a contingency in case your bladder freezes. Pack Four And You’re Doneįour water bottles are all you need on Kili. Just pop the lid off your bottle and pour it in! There’s no risk of mold buildup with a bottle, as there is with a water bladder. Add Flavored Powders Easilyįlavored and electrolyte-rich powders can break up the monotony of drinking lots of water, all day, every day. When you’re aiming to consume the recommended 4 liters a day, this ability to gauge your progress makes a difference. One glance at your bottle and you know exactly how much you have left. ![]() This may sound insignificant, but when you want to keep making progress, halting your momentum may start to feel annoying…though taking a break is definitely a good thing, too! Easy to Know When It Needs Refilled Harder to Drink While Walkingīecause drinking from a bottle usually requires you to stop moving and unscrew a lid, you may only drink during breaks. ![]() There’s little need to worry about your water freezing. Water bottles do just fine at the highest altitudes on Kilimanjaro. We recommend Nalgene bottles that are one liter in size with a wide-mouth for ease of drinking and refilling. Which setup is best for you? Why bring bottles at all, if you’re already bringing a water bladder? Let’s explore the pros and cons in detail.Ī plastic, BPA-free bottle is best on Kili. Kili trekkers usually opt for one of two setups when it comes to hydration transportation: 1) 4 Nalgene water bottles, or 2) 1 hydration bladder and 3 Nalgene bottles. How you store it during your Kili trek can make for a noticeably different experience. ![]() ![]() ![]() While some of these outcomes can be attributed to high-risk behaviors like substance abuse that often result from trauma, even when those aren’t a factor, you’re still at higher health risk due to your sustained stress response. ACEs decrease life expectancy by up to 20 years. People exposed to childhood trauma in high doses have triple the rates of heart disease and lung cancer. Those with six ACE scores were shown to be 40,000 times likelier to commit suicide.Ĭhildhood trauma dramatically affects your brain development, immune system, hormonal systems and even the way your DNA is read and transcribed. The impacts of this cannot be underestimated: in a recent study of 17,000 adults, if a person had even two ACEs, their rates for depression, suicidality and drug use were exponentially higher. It’s estimated that at least 67 percent of the population has had at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE). But if we’re in a constant state of fear – which is what happens in abusive home – it profoundly affects our developmental health.Ĭhildhood trauma is incredibly common. When we have an intense stress response, we’re biologically designed to physically respond to it (this is the phenomenon known as “fight, flight or freeze”). While stress can be a good thing – a certain degree of it is required for motivation – when it accumulates over time, it can become toxic. Trauma is defined as an event that overwhelms our capacity to cope. As an adult, this leads to passive-aggressive behavior as you’re afraid of the consequences of communicating straightforwardly.Ī history of verbal abuse also adds to your catalog of self-criticisms, amplifying negative self-talk in a way that takes concerted effort to overcome. If you felt from a young age that none of your emotional needs were important, you probably learned to bury and suppress them. When you’re raised in an environment that’s lacking in love and support, you don’t have a good reference point for healthy relationships, and you might play out similarly problematic ones throughout your adult life. Conversely, you feel out of touch with your emotionsĭepending on how severe your experience of abuse was, you may feel like your childhood was stolen from you.You feel like you don’t have a firm grasp on your personal identity. You repeatedly find yourself in toxic relationships with unavailable people. The memories you do have are more like small glimpses than contextualized stories. You don’t recall much of your early childhood at all.You may be experiencing the effects of childhood trauma if: We may not even realize the extent of it until the way it presents in our lives as adults forces us to unpack it. Trauma at this stage is so confusing, it can often be hard to recognize. They discovered the participants who had experienced more childhood maltreatment showed greater distrust and were less consistent when judging photographs of unfamiliar faces. How to Recognize the Effects of Childhood Trauma In a 2021 study published in Borderline Personality Disorder and Emotion Dysregulation, researchers implemented a distrust game with the participants. Sadly, being exposed to childhood trauma may affect an individual's ability to trust. For example, an avoidant attachment style can develop after being abused or neglected by caregivers and may contribute to avoidant behavior or refusing to seek help from others.Įstablishing trust is essential for sustaining a healthy, long-lasting relationship with others. In comparison, those with unhealthy bonds to their caretakers may display insecure attachment styles (per Verywell Mind). Those who form healthy bonds with their caretakers are more likely to develop a secure attachment style, feeling reassured that their loved ones will not abandon them. John Bowlby, a British psychologist, examined attachment styles and how separation from caregivers affects children. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Now in charge of ASM (programming language) development for the Link to the Past Randomizer, Karkat was the first to join the team and put his skills in ROM hacking and 65816 (SNES) assembly to work. ![]() He wanted speedrunners to test his version of ALttP, and as Karkat, one of the runners approached, puts it “speedrunners tend to put more stress on a game, so it was probably a good idea to have us all test it.” Karkat and others put the game through its paces, and he was the first to jump in to help smooth out the bugs in the early build. The revived Randomizer project began to take steps towards completion in February of 2016, when Carroll approached members of the ALttP speedrunning community, jumping onto the #alttp channel on the SpeedRunsLive IRC with the first build of the Randomizer. He was actually surprised that when he was finally able to pick the project back up in 2016, no one had created a randomized ALttP yet.īack From the Dead: The Randomizer is Revived Life would get in the way for Carroll as work, family and other projects cut into his time, and bringing the Randomizer to life was put on hold. Finding every item location, and determining what items were needed to get to that location was a painstakingly slow process that was certainly the most tedious and error-prone part for Carroll. Making use of the ALttP ROM editor, Hyrule Magic, to change items at various locations and using a binary diff tool to help him identify what addresses led to what chests in the game’s code, Carroll plugged away at his project. The Randomizer can potentially force players to run to all corners of the map to find items, and Carroll saw this as something that would be appealing to players looking for a new challenge.Ĭarroll’s own challenges that he faced were that he wasn’t really a ROM hacker, and admits to still being quite unfamiliar with 65816 (SNES) assembly, so everything he did to randomize items was trial and error. One thing he hit on early in his work was that in a normal speedrun of ALttP, there are many locations in the game that players never visit because there are no key items in these areas of the game world. In these early days, Carroll was a one-man show, working on the Randomizer in secret. This was somewhere in the middle of 2014. While working on his Super Metroid Randomizer, Carroll “stumbled upon a new algorithm for shuffling items” that he realized he could use to easily build a Randomizer for Link to the Past. To him “it was just natural that I would go ahead and randomize A Link to the Past after having built Randomizers for the other two.” These two games, along with ALttP make up Carroll’s three favorite games, on his favorite system, the Super Nintendo. This hacked version of the game is the brainchild of David “Dessyreqt” Carroll, who had previously worked on randomized versions of Super Metroid and Final Fantasy VI. When a hacked version of A Link to the Past surfaced in the early months of 2016, randomly distributing the items Link needs to complete his quest, it took a classic and gave it new life, creating a game that feels like a new experience every time you play. The progression is straightforward, with Link acquiring items at opportune times to advance to the next dungeon, eventually becoming strong enough to defeat the final boss. Nintendo’s 1992 masterpiece, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a perfectly paced action adventure game, where our plucky hero, Link, must travel the world of Hyrule acquiring the knowledge and tools necessary to defeat Ganon, the King of Evil, and restore balance to the Light and Dark Worlds. ![]() ![]() ![]() Apart from Mooneye Studios who joined the project to help with the publishing aspect, I developed Haven Park alone, in my spare time. For the first launch, one item was a clear vetements copy, there's been times where she's showcased items and there loose threads, it looks poorly fitted, even on the website. ![]() Her clothing doesn't seem well designed and a few items look poorly made. Then there's eggie and her reaction to critism. ![]() For example Jenn's skincare routine one moment it's simple, next it's loreal that she's only been wearing for 2 weeks, next videos she's actually been using sk 2 for three years, like come on sis. I don't mind sponsored content but don't lie to your fans. Her concent has been really poor they past year or two, the only content i really enjoy from her is her vlogs. But i feel like she hasn't really upgraded her content her 2014-16 was her best in my opinion. She lost herself and creativity on the come up, I personally have no problem with youtubers buying expensive things and upgrading their lifestyle. Sorry for the essay lol, but it felt good to get my feelings out there. Maybe I’m thinking too much about her responses, but I suppose this is just the way it is. Like this was a chance for her to be a little more honest, and it still felt fabricated and sponsored on every level to me. I say that this video was the nail in the coffin for me because I just feel like we’re never going to see that fresh-faced, honest Jenn ever again. I think the thing that rubbed me the wrong way the most was her big secret being that she used to smoke cigarettes, like that’s supposed to be some big cat out of the bag or some shameful thing that should appease us for all the other questionable things that have occurred around her channel. I just miss the raw vulnerability of older videos that weren’t sponsored. She has responsibilities and bills to pay. ![]() Again, I don’t want to shame Jenn in any way for her life or her choices. It’s turned into the very thing that it claimed to go against. It started out as a genuine network of talented and real artists, both experienced and amateurs alike, but it’s turned into a toxic cesspool where everything is ruled by who pays the most. I’m sad for what beauty and fashion content has turned into. It’s hard to be genuine when your entire life is the face of multiple brands that could pull their funding out at any moment if she were to do something “off-brand.” Everything in their life is paid for by brands. Does she do anything for herself? Would she go on a trip that she paid for on her own? I don’t mean to pass judgments, as I don’t know or fully understand the situation more than anyone else here. Has she been on a single trip recently that wasn’t sponsored in some way? Her wedding was sponsored, her honeymoon. She’s a hard worker and I feel deep down she still is the same person she was 9 years ago, but I do question what’s really going on in her life. ![]() I don’t begrudge her for her wealth or success. It seems like nearly every travel vlog, beauty video, or Instagram post has a dollar amount behind it. I’m happy she seems to have a loving husband and an incredible support network with her friends, but it is hard to tell what’s real and what’s fake. I stopped religiously watching her videos a while ago, but I would check in every now and then to see how she’s doing. She singlehandedly got me into thrifting and inspired me so much on finding my own style and how to still look fabulous on a budget, which I utilized exponentially as a broke high school student and then an even broker college student. I started watching her when Sarah was still on the channel, so I think maybe since 2010? I loved the thrifting videos and her style so much. This video made me sad, and it is kind of the nail in the coffin of an almost decade-long viewership of her channel. ![]() |
